Jewel Pet 18-19: Beaches and Nasty Little Kitties

Episode 18 wasn’t properly a beach episode, really, it was more of a Summer Vacation in Jewel Land episode, including a brief beach sequence.  Amazingly though, it looks like episode 20 will be an actual beach episode, as in, beaches in the real world!

Still, I might as well comment briefly on the variety of swimwear seen in 18.

First off, it’s no surprise who came out with the sexiest swimsuit of all.  Hint: a pink Persian and subject of a legendary shower scene.  Yup, you guessed it, it’s Garnet!

She's got the attitude.

She's got the attitude.

Silver with pink is certainly a bold combination, although I’d tell her to lose the bling as it kind of upsets the look.  But I’m sure she thinks the gem is essential…

Next up is the Papillon with the American accent [what does it mean in Jewel Land terms to speak Japanese with an American accent??  This is when lacking a pool of bloggers covering this series really hurts…people need to be researching this!] Anyways, Peridot!!  Here she is:

Tan tan tan!

Tan tan tan!

I love the Stars and Stripes motif.  You can’t accuse Peridot of being inconsistent:  she’s the gaijin of the show and she relishes her role.  An interesting factoid: Peridot shares her birthday with Yoshitoshi ABe’s own birthday AND with my anniversary…

And then of course, we have Rinko.

The one on the left、for all of you non-jewellers.

The one on the left、for all of you non-Jewellers.

I’m always somewhat suspicious of people that dress the same color as the background they find themselves in (maybe it’s a camouflage phobia I have or something).  In any case, Rinko’s bikini is cute.  But wait, that’s the problem!  It’s too cute.  Rinko’s fascination with Cuteness at the expense of Maturation and Growth is one of the great themes of the show.  Even the Jewel Pets accuse her of being immature.

Notice that Flora the Sheep doesn’t seem to be wearing anything!  Incidentally, Ruby forgot to pack a swimsuit and was too shy to go swimming so I can’t post a pic of hers.

Finally, there’s Aoi Arisugawa.  While technically not participating in the trip to Jewel Land, we do get to see her during her summer vacation abroad, here:

Fail, IMHO

Fail, IMHO

Aoi’s swimsuit almost screams out: Hattori, my butler, I wore this for you!  (Hattori is ancient, handsome but ancient).  I hope they don’t make them into a couple…  Anyways, it’s not clear where Aoi has gone off to, but in my expert opinion she’s in one of the Greek Isles, possibly Aegina…

What the Jewel Pets would look like if they walked in on Aoi and Hattori

Episode 19 reveals the truth behind the alliance between Diana and her three minions.  The fundamental insight here, as if we didn’t know it already, is that Diana is quite the nasty little kitty.  She’s totally abusing the three thieves and only their desperate lack of food and resources keeps them loyal to her.  It’s quite sad, actually.

No that's not Diana, but it'd be to complicated to explain. Oh well, why not. Basically, Seiji from the Phantom Thieves finds a little black kitten and takes it in. After a few days the kitten disappears. Then Seiji finds a black and pink jewel, which begins to speak to him. It claims it's the black kitty from before, but that an evil witch has cursed her and changed her into jewel form. The jewel leads Seiji and his gang up to where Rinko and her gang. Rinko and Ruby are about to cast their spell to release the Jewel Pets when Seiji, by exposing the mystery jewel toward the area where the spell is being cast, releases the kitty in the black and pink jewel. However, it turns out that this is Diana, who is NOT at all the black kitty from before. She calls Seiji a sucker and vanishes. Eventually, the phantom thieves discover that the black kitty from before has made it safely to its original home.

I was happy to learn a brand new word this episode: 正夢 (=masayume).  It means a prophetic dream, a dream that comes true.  I guess that makes sense since “masa” means “true” and “yume” means dream.  Its a very nice sounding term and I definitely haven’t consciously heard it before, or I would have memorized it!

Pennilessness sucks.

  1. The final episode of the Hayate no Gotoku adaption’s first season definitely took place on a Greek island. It’d be amusing if that was anime’s standard destination for young blondes with butlers in tow.

  2. Perhaps, the birthday of Peridot refers to the day when Columbus started his journey from Palos de la Frontera…

Camouflage phobia! haha Well, there is a pink outline for some contrast 😛

That little black kitty is sooo cute! :3

Ah, masayume is a nice word – I’ll remember it 🙂

  3. @Animanachronism

It makes sense. That’s where I’d go if I was blond with a butler..

    @Kitsune

It seems you have a case of kuronekophilia. My own dream is to own a Scottish Fold. E.g.

    You’re right about Columbus BTW.
