Ikki Tousen 117-121: Catching Up (nsfw)

Over a year ago I wrote a post on Ikki Tousen ch. 108, where I reported on (and agreed with) the fandom’s assessment that the Battle of Red Cliffs arc was dragging.  Well, I’ve caught up with my Ikki and guess what?  The battle has yet to end.  I also noted approvingly in that post the fan consensus that it would be stupid to revive Kan’u.  As of chapter 117, she has been revived, though she’s still ailing…

One isn't alive, the other one is never around.

What’s annoying about this arc is not that it is long, but that so little is happening.  In essence:

Ryuubi goes nuts, starts killing and munching people.

Sousou goes nuts (a darker, more dangerous nuts) and smacks Ryuubi down.

Sonsaku powers up (without going nuts) and smacks Sousou down.

And it took two years for this much to occur (consider that the arc begins around chapter 90!).

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Let me start from around chapter 117.  The plot in this manga has always confused me, but from what I can tell Sonsaku Hakufu discovers that her destiny is to break the (samsaric) cycle of the magatama.  To do this she must defeat Sousou.  This is very paradoxical, as her fate is to liberate all of these warriors from their fates!!  The liberator is a slave.  However, Sonsaku refuses to either kill Sousou (her destiny so called) or be defeated by him (her fate according to the magatama).  Her only option is to try to make peace with him.

There’s a battle inside of Sousou’s soul.  His own ego wants to accept Sonsaku’s offer, but his old self (Cao Cao) refuses and takes over.  [Things are probably being aggravated by Shibai, the power behind Kyoshou Academy, who is at the same time summoning arcane powers to the her school’s side.  Sousou gets up, his dragon starts coming nice and strong, volcanoes begin to erupt etc.  He even sings the same song that Cao Cao sang just before the Battle of Red Cliffs [does this mean the battle hasn’t even properly begun yet…OMG!].  The song is usually called “Short Song Style” and is quoted with translation in the middle of this article [here].  As he sings, he begins to beat Sonsaku up.  Other Nanyou and Seito warriors try to help but Sousou (or rather the dragon and Cao Cao within him) is too strong.

It's Cao Cao's show.

Around this time a mysterious girl (another new character, geez!) pops up.  She hovers over the battle and we get a sense that she’s a very important person.

Then in chapter 121 Sonsaku’s dragon begins to stir.  Her water power extinguishes all the flames in the area (and maybe in Japan).  She also has a good line here: “The Son clan motto is ‘We always return what we’ve been lent.’  Sou-chan, I’m giving everything back to you 10 billion times over!”.  And with that she begins to turn the tables on Sousou.

Sonsaku gets mad.

The mysterious girl faces Shibai, who is still trying to squeeze as much of the dragon power [I’m guessing for Sousou’s sake, but ultimately for her own] as she can.  The mysterious girl announces she is Kentei, the (reincarnation of) Emperor Xian of Han.  As Kentei, she is the rightful heir to the throne of all under heaven.

HISTORICAL INTERLUDE: Basically, Xian was the last Emperor of the Han dynasty.  He began his reign in 189 and never really had much power.  Around 196 he became a puppet of Cao Cao’s.  12 years later the Battle of Red Cliffs was fought.  Finally in 220 Cao Cao’s son forced Xian to abdicate and retire.  Thus it makes sense that Kentei would try to fight against Sousou’s faction here.

Minor warriors hang about as Sonsaku's water dragon floods the city.

ANIME INTERLUDE: Wait, Kentei also shows up in Ikki Tousen XX…as the male villain of the show!  Talk about confusing.  Though as soon as he shows up people start branding this Kentei as an impostor…No one spoil what happens in the anime for me please!

Anyway, Shibai is impressed for about 5 seconds and then points out the fact that as she is the reincarnation of Sima Yi, whose descendants established the Jin Dynasty after putting the Cao clan out of business (in the year 265), she has as much of a right to wield the dragon power as Kentei.  Kentei mocks her opponent and denies that she is Shibai/Sima Yi.  Instead she accuses her of being Gifu (Weifeng in Chinese) who was a politician in the service of Cao Cao back in the Three Kingdoms period.

Is this accusation true?  Is “Shibai” aware that she is not Shibai?  I can’t tell you because the episode ends here.  All I know is Gifu/Weifeng is a minor figure and several steps down from the great Sima Yi of Chinese history and legend.  Oh, and the fact that Shibai, aside from being a transliteration of the name of Sima Yi, happens to mean “act” or “show” when spelled with different characters 🙂

Shibai lures the dragon.

For a show that’s supposed to revolve around fan-service, you need a surprising degree of knowledge of Chinese history (or at least willingness to research) to follow what is going on.  I honestly believed the mangaka would tire at some point and stop alluding to history, but these days he seems to be more into it than ever!  I’m impressed (despite all the ranting from 2ch that Shiozaki gets all of his history wrong).

The art itself is good as always.  There are a lot of nice scenes, and not only of pretty ladies with exploding clothes [the one with the waterdrops above is a good example] .  Because the chapters are so small, if you read 6 or 7 of them at a time they are pretty entertaining.  The one thing that’s really upsetting is the absence of Ryomou.  She’s been on the cover of the magazine at least twice in the last 7 volumes, so clearly the editors realize that her character is popular but Shiozaki refuses to let her come back!

P.S. Soujin (shown in the pic below from chapter 118) has actually been naked since she lost her clothes in a fight against Chou’un back in chapter 89.  That’s over 30 chapters she’s been lacking clothes, TWO YEARS AND A HALF IN REAL TIME.

The hat is still there though.
