Ikki Tousen Volume 19 Sidestory # 1 (nsfw)

This is the first sidestory in Volume 19.  I’ve translated chapters 128 and 129 here, and if I get a chance I’ll put up a translation of chapter 130 as well, which is the last in the volume.  Anyway, there’s some interesting history in this sidestory and a very popular character makes a reappearance!!

Dialogue in quotation marks (each speech bubble gets its own set of quotation marks).

Italics refer to the narrator’s speech.

1

The time is one year before the Battle of Red Cliffs, a time of warfare between warlords.  Yoshuu Academy’s Enshou and Yuushuu Academy’s Kouson San were locked in a stalemate.  In order to break it Enshou sent an assassin his way.

Enshou is talked of in the manga back in chapter 38, where he sends the assassin that ends up taking Kakouton’s eye.  Very rough historical background: Enshou, Kouson and Sousou were all warlords in the North.  First Enshou defeated Kouson.  Then Sousou defeated Enshou.

We see a short-haired nude woman pricking her finger with a sword and then licking it.

2

A historical blurb on Kiku Gi, one of Enshou’s greatest generals.

3

Chou’un Shiryuu is sitting down in the seiza style, her eyes closed (of course).  A little blurb says she’s a B rank fighter, a first year high school student at Yuushuu Academy.  So this is before she moved to Seito~

A voice can be heard off shot: “Are you still there?”  “How many days has it been?”  Then Chou’un replies: “I won’t return home until you make this for me.”

4

We see the old dude that’s been talking to her, the swordsmith Muramasa.  “Get naked”.  “What?”  she says.  “Take all of your clothes off.”  “If you show me your p**** in all its glory I won’t mind making you this blade.”

“He he he he” he goes on, with Chou’un all confused.  “But…”  “Why do you…”  “…want a Murasama blade so badly?”

5

The scene shifts to Yuushuu Academy, Chou’un’s school.  Kouson San Hakukei, the Yuushuu leader, is sweating like a dog.  Genkou, a B-rank girl with a long ponytail, is trying to calm him.  “It’ll be fine, Kouson.”  “You have a hundred of our high-rank warriors ready to serve as shields.”  “An assassin?” she asks rhetorically, “more like a baby bug struggling.”

Kouson’s not listening, just scratching his head.  Kouson looks at the message on his cell phone, which reads: “Lord Kouson San, today I shall come to take your head.”   Genkou scowls: “What a nerve!”

One of Kouson’s minions gets on the phone.  “Hello, roof.  Main gate, can you hear me?  Main gate?”  “Hey!”  “What the-”  “They’re skipping duty again.”  And here we get a shot of the main gate and a couple of Yuushuu warriors dead and bloody on the ground.

6

Back to Chou’un and Muramasa.  Chou’un is talking.  “The assassin is”  “probably Kiku Gi.”  “She is said to wield a demon sword.”  “She’s the strongest A-ranker in Yoshuu.”

We see an image of a skeleton on a horse with a great sword.  “The only thing that can resist a demonic weapon” “is the so-called ‘magical sword’ Muramasa”.  So evidently this is why Chou’un has come, so she can get the sword to fight the coming assassin.

The old dude gets philosophical.  “You.”  “What do you fight for?”  “Is it for your lord?”  “For your honor?”  “Or is it all just the law of the magatamas?”  Chou’un responds: “Of course” “I fight for the sake of my lord Kouson San.”

Then the old man says: “That guy?”

7

“Is he great enough to be worth risking your life for him?”

Chou’un immediately gets a flashback or Ryuubi [so she knows Ryuubi at this point, huh].  Ryuubi is saying “Shi”  “I will always with for you.”  Then Chou’un mulls over the name: Lady Ryuubi…Gentoku.

Now she begins to strip.  “I don’t know…” “what I fight for”  “and that’s precisely why”  “I’ve come here, in search of answers.”  “I need the Muramasa for that.”

The old man stands up and says “I’m sorry to say” “I’m totally blind.”  Chou’un is surprised “Huh?”.  Muramasa says: “So I haven’t forged a sword in five years”  “and I can’t see your body either.”

8

He sits down again.  “Nobody knows what they fight for.”  “However”  “if someone actually knew that”  “s/he would be the strongest one.”  And to go with his words we see a praying mantis eating a moth or cicada or something.  How poetic.

Scene shifts to the main gate at Yuushuu.  Carnage all around.  Genkou is surveying the horrible scene.  Kiku Gi the assassin is hanging overhead from a pipe ninja-style [evidently she’s the woman that showed up at the very beginning].  “Hehe” she says.  “Hehe.”  And she thinks to herself “There were many more than I expected so I’m running out of knives.”  She jumps down, tosses a couple of knives at Genkou, who deflects with her sword.

They square off against each other.  “Hehe,” she says again, thinking “But it’s alright.”  Kiku Gi is wearing a jumpsuit, now she unzips the front and we can say a great sword tattoo (?) running down between her breasts.

9

Now the sword hilt becomes real and she starts pulling out the sword from her chest.  Wow.  Genkou is sweating now.

10

Scene switch to the Yuushuu Academy roof.  Kouson is frantically trying to reach Genkou.

“Hey!”  “What’s going on Genko?!”  “Answer me!!”

All of the sudden part of the building collapses, Kouson says “Whhhaaat?” and the severed hand of Genkou (still holding her sword) falls near Kouson.  The Yuushuu leader feels something behind him: it’s Kiku Gi, who’s touching him with her blade.  Most surprisingly, Kiku Gi has had a total outfit change.  Before she was wearing a jumpsuit with nothing underneath.  Now she’s wearing a bikini with gloves.  I guess it’s easy to be fashionable when you dabble in the demonic.

11

I should have explained the deal with Kiku Gi’s hehe’s earlier.  Every time she giggles, she also thinks something, and the manga puts it in parentheses after the “hehe”.  Here she does it again, and what she’s thinking is “Setting yourself up at the top of a hill”  “is a taboo in military tactics.”

Kiku Gi pricks Kouson on the back of the neck just enough to make him bleed a little, and the man says “Ugh.”  But just then Chou’un pops up with a sword.  Kiku Gi runs to the attack.

12

Kiku Gi’s attack is explosive, she dashes real quickly and things literally blow up.  When the dust settles it’s clear Chou’un has jumped on a ledge [on the roof?] and avoided the charge altogether.  She introduces herself: “Yuushuu Academy First Year”  “Chou’un Shiryuu.”   “Kiku Gi…”  “There is one thing I’d like to ask you.”  Suddenly the assassin’s eyes widen as she thinks she recognizes the sword Chou’un carries: “Muramasa?!”

13

As they cross swords it takes three speech bubbles for Chou’un to propose her epic question:  “What”  “are you”  “fighting for?”

14

Maybe Kiku Gi didn’t hear well, because Cho’un asks again.  “I will ask you one more time…”  “You…”

15

“…And all of us…”  “What is it for?”

Before Kiku Gi can give any answer, the Muramasa literally slices the demon sword.

16

Kiku Gi is thrown back, her magatama shattered.  We can’t really see any blood but it’s clear Kiku Gi is dead as they come.

17

Chou’un is exhausted.  She kneels with the sword in one hand and scabbard in the other.  “Huff”  “huff”  “huff”  “huff.”

18

Chou’un senses someone a few meters behind her.  We can see it’s Ryofu Housen!!

“Another…”  “assassin?!”  Then the realization: “No..no…”  “From the beginning”  “the assassin wasn’t Kiku Gi at all…”  We see now an image of a demented Ryofu carefully, almost lovingly, putting her hands around Kouson’s cheeks.

Ryofu deals with Kouson.

19

She then tosses him to the ground, with such force that he cracks his skull and there’s blood all over the place.  Chou’un’s thought is carried in really large font on the page: “Ryofu Housen!!”

20

Chou’un makes ready as if to fight but Ryofu isn’t interested.  She starts walking off and says: “Don’t worry, you don’t need to be so scared.”  “I just received the decree [order] to come here and so I came.”  “You asked an interesting question, huh.”  “What do we”  “fight for…”

21

“As for me,” Ryofu adds, “I fight for myself.”

Chou’un has a flashback to the old swordsmith saying “if someone actually knew that”  “s/he would be the strongest one.”

22

Ryofu walks into the distance.  Chou’un thinks of Ryuubi.

23

After that, Chou’un sealed the Muramasa away in the Seito shrine and disappeared.  She only resurfaced one year later at the time of Myousai Kakouen’s attack of Ryuubi.

THE END
