Interested in a Harlock/Leijiverse Forum?
The topic comes up every so often on this blog, and the need for an English-speaking forum focused on the Leijiverse is more pressing now than ever. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting 40+ comments on my Harlock film posts (more than 80 on one of them!) but it does become hard to navigate.
Besides, as the interest in the upcoming film rises, I’m finding more and more people online asking questions about the characters etc. I want to be able to point them to a place where they can hang out and speak their minds in English. Pointing to my blog doesn’t work so well, because here the conversations are restricted by whatever topic I posted about, and we quickly get into esoteric matters as well. Not to mention that my blog is not strictly Leijiverse-focused to begin with! But the main thing is that a blog simply doesn’t allow for the layers of engagement, information and interests that a forum possesses.
The Francophone forums have done an amazing job to provide a space for the fans, engage with Mr. Matsumoto’s work at all levels and even shape the way his work comes down to us. I believe 100% that the fact that this latest film, for example, is taking into account international audiences is at least partly due to the work and organization of the Francophone fans. And I’d like believe that there are enough of us Anglophone Leiji fans out there to make a contribution as well.
So, are you interested in contributing to setting this up, or at least interested in participating once it’s open? I have some experience with setting up forums for other stuff (nothing too fancy, mind you, just work-related) but I am all ears for suggestions. I get the feeling that the forum title should include the word “Harlock”. It’s not simply a matter of riding on the wave of interest, though I bet more people will find it that way than if the key word was “Leijiverse”, but it’s also a matter of the centrality of this character and the passion that he generates in all fans. As I said though, I’m open to any and every suggestion. That is, of course, if you’re interested.
P.S. Maybe it would be good to allow for the possibility of sub-forums in other neglected languages, such as Spanish. Actually, a good idea might be to set up a thread where people can contribute links to forums and websites in a range of languages. We definitely need a fanart section, and a questions section, etc etc.
P.P.S Potential forum catchphrase: “If you want to change the world, join this forum.” 🙂
Count me in!

I’d participate in a forum for sure. Cannot quite commit to more than that at this point.

Well as one of the major “offendors” I guess I should offer any services I can…!! 😉

Hehe. I’ll be emailing you tomorrow.

…kind of figured I’d be hearing from you… 😉 BTW – that’s a great poster! I’ve removed my webpage index to make room for it! (Interesting positioning of the 5 major crewmembers…)

I’m interested in the huge ax on the right.

Makes sense for boarding parties… Ginga Eiyu Densetsu is rather fond of ’em…

Completely new here and new to Leijiverse in general (so my opinion is not really important) but I think that forum is great idea.

Your opinion is important! Thanks for the input (I recommend watching the Arcadia of my Youth film if you haven’t had a chance; others may have other suggestions).
animekritik said this on June 21, 2013 at 12:33 pm |
Thanks for suggestion. For now I’m watching Yamato 2199, original Yamato for comparison (and 2199 looks like great example how to make remake) and original Harlock (and I’m amazed because I like it even when it pulls things for which I’d drop other shows). So I’ll probably watch Arcadia after I finish SPCH.
Sataniel said this on June 21, 2013 at 2:53 pm |
Oh, wow. I thought you were at zero, but you’re already quite into things. You’ll love Arcadia after watching SPCH. Just keep in mind that Arcadia is technically a prequel to SPCH (though it’ll have more of an impact watching it after SPCH for sure).

Great! Start thinking of forum names and stuff~

“Et in Arcadia Ego”? 😉
Helen Fayle said this on June 21, 2013 at 3:13 pm |
OMG, that’s total genius wordplay (you could even change it to Et in Arcadia Nos, make it a group thing). Not sure it would be an optimal name because lots of people might not get it, plus the people that do get it might get depressed at being reminded of the omnipresence of death you know. But it’s still a pretty awesome name.
Here’s the Wikipedia article for whoever’s wandering:

I will definitely read what’s written. It sounds like you are at the center of a community 🙂 I look forward to hearing more about the film and eventually seeing it myself.

Kind of reminds me of me, 13 years ago when I first made the “big discovery”!
Warning, Michael – it STARTS with “wow” – it ends in “where did all the money go?”!! 😉

I never had much of a problem. Are you sure you’re not a bot?! You could be one of the latest AI bots that thinks they’re human, you know. Food for thought.
You’ll hear from me soon~

no they just had questions I didn’t understand because they were about Rabbit translated products i hadn’t read Then I promptly forgot my password.
yamiangie said this on June 22, 2013 at 7:59 pm |
Hahaha. Hmmm, I don’t think we should have any kind of questions to ask potential members, except maybe “Are you a troll?”

Count me in! I’m definitely interested in a Harlock/Leijiverse forum! Since following the really long comment threads can be a tad confusing. ^_^

I’m actually quite busy now and I just can’t handle doing it, so pretty much this idea is in hiatus

I just don’t have the tech savvy these days or I’d offer more help!
Helen Fayle said this on July 29, 2013 at 1:05 pm |
No prob. I’m in the same boat. This requires at least one person to have a significant amount of time and a significant amount of tech/design skill to do it properly. I’m a bit lacking in both at the moment. I could set up a very basic, ugly forum, but my father always says “do it right or don’t do it at all” so..
